profile of the week > facade in ottawa

Now this is a hot facade, courtesy of our friends at Desire to Inspire we bring you another beauty, this time from John Donkin in Ottawa. It’s 1700 square feet and includes amongst other things, a visitors’ apartment which has been cantilevered sideways to create a shaded area in summer and a covered parking spot and sheltered entrance in winter. But the absolute cracker with this house is the facade. It made from some kind of metal and has a stunning rusted look which provides incredible textural relief from the timber and corrugated iron.

So where’s the stone you ask? Well I do try and profile architects & designers where they have used stone in the landscape or inside the home, this one has not. What baffles me is why an architect would design and build such an interesting looking home and then. . . go and put standard bricks around the fireplace. Here’s a house that’s crying out for a stone design accent is it not? Ok there’s the link. Satisfied? Nonetheless, stone or no stone, the facade is stunning. I’m loving it.
