Broadbent is esteemed as a pioneer of historic house conservation. He became Australia’s first professional in this field when he was appointed curator of Sydney’s Elizabeth Bay House in 1977. He took a scholarly approach, working with 1830s inventories and other documents to restore the house in keeping with its historical significance, not just make it beautiful.

Paul has created a magical seven acre garden in Denver, Victoria. It is home to beautiful perennial gardens, walled gardens, woodland gardens, rose gardens, veggie gardens and so much more. Spring is a beautiful time to visit gardens and an opportunity to visit one of Australia’s best is a must.

Stephanie’s Kitchen Garden Foundation is  a great organisation that encourages children to learn about fruit and veg and cooking. The results are amazing and life changing for the kids involved. Have a look on their website for further details.

Called ‘Designers’ Saturday’ it will run from 10am – 5pm and  will showcase the latest in designer pieces in one day open to design professionals and all members of the public. Design hunters will check in at a central location at the beautiful Queen’s Theatre (cnr of Playhouse Lane & Gilles Arcade) equipped to collect their itinerary, enjoy a coffee, food, recharge and then move about the city to explore the showrooms. Adelaide’s leading suppliers will show off the latest in chairs, tables, storage solutions and accessories for the home, office, and cafe.

Join in the design conversation at Eco Outdoor’s Moët & Chandon Bar on Designers’ Saturday 5th Nov, from 1pm to 4pm and get a sneak preview of some of its latest designs.

Our team will be instore all day presenting the latest furniture ranges, together with the latest prototype drawings for next season.We’ll showcase new pieces and talk to designers about where we think outdoor furniture is headed. Describe your style.

In a nutshell; modern contemporary. I love floating edges and cantilevers (hence why the guys and girls at Eco are always dropping rebated edge paver samples into my studio!). I also love natural stone and timber and always strive to combine natural materials into my designs.

What inspires you?

The American modernism and contemporary architecture in general; the Kaufmann House in Palm Spring by Richard Neutra in particular. The minimalist approach in landscape design always inspires me and I love seeing product used in unusual and challenging ways to create real beauty.

Your favourite outdoor space?

That’s a hard one… I’m torn between the magnificence of the Walls of Jerusalem national park in Tasmania and some of the incredible designed public spaces in and around Melbourne such as Federation Square. Oh and my own pool once the weather picks up!

One tip for people as they head into Spring?

Get ready for spring as soon as you can because the growth is going to be berserk. I’d also put your solar heating on for grand final day (either NRL or AFL) as a quick dip during game time can be very refreshing!

Describe your style.

My style differs from garden to garden. The inspirational starting point for me is always different; we’re working with a different house, a different outdoor space, not to mention a different client. I try to understand what inspires my client and create a design that reflects that, and resonates with their home and any existing features outside.

What inspires you?

Change. I like the idea of changing a space to create purpose, style and function. For me, a lot of the devil is in the detail. I’m always looking for new design ideas and different techniques and methods. It’s the little things that bring a garden to life and create a space that people want to be in.

Your favourite outdoor space?

Commonwealth Park in Canberra on a sunny Autumn day and Ballast Park in Sydney – I love the form and scale of the place.

One tip for people as they head into Spring?

Spring is the perfect time to get your garden ready for summer! If you’re planning on getting some professional work done, now is the time to get some advice so you can get moving. Do the work now (or better still get someone else to do it!) and you can sit back, relax and enjoy the outdoor living space you’ve created as the weather warms up.

One designer that I really love is London based Martha Freud who works with a very natural ascetic. Her designs have a very natural feel which is what I love most. Her lighting is fantastic and the tealights are so clever and I’m sure would create some funny (or awkward) conversation.

Martha had a recent exhibition at Camley Street National Park, close to St Pancras station in central London called ‘Mixed Messages’ celebrating 30 years of the Wildlife Trust. Martha’s exhibition was in conjunction with London Design Festival.
