Winners of the 2017 Eat Drink Design Awards were announced at The Pavilion in Melbourne last night.

Now in its 6th year, the annual awards aim to recognise the best hospitality establishments in Australia and New Zealand across six categories. 94 projects were shortlisted in this year’s Eat Drink Design Awards including restaurants, bars, cafés, installations, retail spaces and branding.

“What did unite the entries was a sweeping sense of ambition across all categories, albeit one focused on detail at the expense of ‘big moves,’” said the jury of the Eat Drink Design Awards.

“Another interesting observation made from the trenches of this year’s judging is that designers, and indeed operators, seem to be designing to and from a base of intrinsic practicality, whether that be the durability of materials and joinery, or the distinct lack of superfluous multi-million-dollar budgets.”

“The projects with the smallest budgets this year showed the most attention to such detail and created the most thoughtful design moments.”

Best Restaurant Design

One of the national design awards winners was Viet Next Door, designed by Ryan Genesin of Genesin Studio. The Vietnamese tapas bar hasn’t even opened yet and still won the award for Best Restaurant Design.

The jury noted: “Viet Next Door represents a pinnacle of artisanal crafting and an instance where a great deal of thought has clearly been invested in every detail.”

One of those details was the use of Eco Outdoor Torino stone throughout the restaurant. The mottled bluestone pavers look stunning in Genesin’s design alongside the materials palette of brass lights, oak joinery, woven grass wallpaper and leather upholstery.

Genesin explains: “The space needed to reflect new energy, culinary maturity and familiarity all at the same time to create cultural connection.”

Well timed, the restaurant is due to open next week.

The winners of the remaining 5 categories are…
