Inspired by the region’s medieval and renaissance history, GGA Gardini Gibertini Architetti has created a series of elegant stone buildings that stand above ancient remains. Avoiding one large structure, the architects divided the single-family home into separate buildings to better suit the scale of the landscape. Resting on red concrete platforms, the stone dwellings are elevated to take full advantage of the rolling hillside view.

Pure shapes, the stone structures have been designed free from drainpipes and gutters allowing the material and form to be the hero. Internally, the palette has been stripped back to take a contemporaneity approach to the design, materials and soft furnishings. Concrete, custom walnut furnishings and joinery, and leather fill the exhibition-like interiors. Hidden from view are service points, electrical and technology components to create a streamlined, monolithic aesthetic.

The entrance to the home is located in the basement garage which leads to a cinema room and gallery that are housed in the connecting space between the main building. A staircase leads to the heart of the main stone dwelling to reveal a swimming pool overlooking the expansive rural landscapes. The first floor is taken up by a minimalist kitchen, dining room and living area. The upper level contains a master apartment and two double bedrooms.

While the stone residence has a contemporary and new feel, it’s form and use of natural materials restores the dialogue between the building, the site and the historical significance.
