Camping tips for those who hate camping

Camping has come along way and if you don’t like the idea of roughing it you no longer have to while still enjoying the experience of sleeping outdoors. If you think you’re not the camping type, these camping tips are for you.

Explore like a local

Exploring new places is one of the great pleasures in life. But rather than follow the flag like a travel tour group or stick around the campsite, go and explore like a local. Head to the nearest cafe or store and get the insight information from a local resident. They can give you great tips on the private picnic spots, bike and walking trails or the best spots for a dip away from the crowds.

Try out the modern form of camping

If the thought of a cramped caravan park doesn’t thrill you, try out the modern form of camping. Glamping has become popular for those who like the idea of camping, but can’t bare to give up life’s luxuries. You still get to experience sleeping amongst nature in a tent but in complete comfort.  Australia-wide you can find plenty of great glamping spots. We’ve listed our top 8 favs here.

Off-grid holidays are also becoming more and more popular. These are ideal escapes for those who enjoy getting back to basics, yet still like the comforts of sleeping in cabin-style accommodation. You can find five great Victorian escapes here.

Pick your campsite wisely

Picking your campsite wisely is one of the most valuable camping tips you can implement. Where you choose to pitch your tent can have a big impact on how much you’re going to enjoy your camping adventure. Decide on the type of camper you think you are. If you’re happy to be amongst a hive of activity and like the idea of on-site facilities then look for a big camping ground in a well-known holiday area. If you want a more peaceful experience and happy with just the bare essentials, you need to head off the beaten track.

Also, pick the spot at the campsite wisely. While it might seem great to be close to the toilets or BBQ area, you’re going to have constant traffic and probably hear more noise.

Up your culinary game

Camping food has come a long way since the days of dehydrated potatoes and tinned baked beans. Before you bag the snags and burger buns, test something new and up your culinary game. Try cooking some fish over an open flame, a breakfast hash in a skillet or a dutch-oven apple cobbler.  If you are going bush and need supplies for on the go, Patagonia Provisions are reinventing the traditional camp food and will make your camping experience much more pleasurable.

Indulge in the little luxuries

You may be camping, but that doesn’t mean you can’t indulge in some of life’s little luxuries. We’re thinking a nice bottle of red to be enjoyed alongside your campfire feast or a nice throw to curl up in at night. You can still immerse yourself in the beauty of the great outdoors and enjoy some of the finer things too.
