What are the types of limestone?

There are several varieties of limestone that differ in how the stone is formed, its composition and its appearance.

Travertine, for example, is a type of limestone that is often found in cave environments and formed when the water evaporates and calcium carbonate is deposited in the cave’s surface. As these deposits accumulate, the cave formations such as stalactites and stalagmites are created.

Other types of limestone include Chalk, Tufa, Lithographic, Oolitic, Coquina and Fossiliferous.

Some limestones are denser and more consistent than others and our range concentrates on the denser scale making it suitable for most applications.

What are the uses of limestone?

Traditionally, limestone was used to create ancient landmarks such as the Egyptian pyramids. In more recent times, it has been a popular construction material across Europe and North America to create buildings, build roads and used frequently in the rail industry.

It is also used for flooring and cladding as well as kitchen and bathroom benchtops.
