Outdoor lounge setting on Torino bluestone paving

This suburban garden of Melbourne needed to serve many masters. The brief to Scott Leung of Eckersley Garden Architecture was to transform the existing unusable and overgrown grassed back yard into a place for entertaining and relaxation. With the rear of the house mainly glass, the view from the newly renovated interior into the garden space was integral to the overall success of the project.

An existing narrow deck from the house was extended to travel seamlessly from the interior to the new pool and to comfortably accommodate a dining setting. The shape of the pool has been influenced by the architecture and lies central in the garden. It extends further into a lap pool which can be seen through the house from the front door. Flanked by clipped Portugal Laurel hedges it continues to wrap itself around an intimate tree canopy shaded seating area for lazy summer afternoons. Nestled on the opposite side of the garden, is a creeper clad pergola covered lounge area with an outdoor fireplace leading to a BBQ and kitchen work top. The curtaining of the Virginia creeper softens the space providing summer shade and an ever changing display of colour. The irregular marbling of the Granite Torino paving used throughout the garden gives the highly finished stone a truly natural look and marries well with the Grey Mist timber decking.
